DIĀR Concert: Celebrating Iranian Music at UCLA
Farhang Foundation and the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music presented the DIĀR concert, an innovative concert curated by Dr. Shahab Paranj, featuring pure Persian classical music and contemporary compositions influenced by that rich tradition. Iranian virtuoso musicians Sohrab Pournazeri and Pejman Hadadi joined Dr. Shahab Paranj and the Iranshahr String Quartet in the premieres of four new compositions by Richard Danielpour, Ian Krouse, Reza Vali, and Shahab Paranj. Michelle Rice also performed a solo piece composed by Shahab Paranj. This concert celebrated the appointment of Dr. Shahab Paranj as a new post-doctoral scholar in the music department at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Dr. Paranj’s research focuses on the construction and creative process of rhythm in the Āvazi vocal style in Iranian music. His postdoctoral appointment is being supported through Farhang Foundation.
