The Frankfurt School, Authoritarianism, Islamism and Cosmetics: From 1920's Germany to the Middle East

از آلمان دهه ۱۹۲۰ تا خاورمیانه عصر حاضر
Lecture in Persian by Janet Afary (UC Santa Barbara).
Following the lecture, there will be a period for Q & A.
There is very little information on the romantic and sexual behaviors of young Muslim contemporaries in the Middle East, or among immigrant communities in the West. However, Facebook has provided us with a new tool, which permits a better understanding of young Muslim practices from Algeria and Egypt to Iran and Pakistan. In this lecture, two questions will be addressed: is there’s a link between authoritarianism and the desire to control women's bodies? Furthermore, is there a connection between authoritarianism and Islamic religious fundamentalism, similar to a correlation that recent studies in the US and Canada have confirmed between Christian fundamentalism and right-wing authoritarianism?
Janet Afary is a native of Iran and a historian of modern Iran. She has an MA in Linguistics from Tehran University and a PhD in History and Near East Studies from the University of Michigan. Afary holds the Mellichamp Chair in Global Religion and Modernity at the University of California Santa Barbara, where she is a Professor of Religious Studies and Feminist Studies. Her books include: Sexual Politics in Modern Iran (2009); The Iranian Constitutional Revolution: Grassroots Democracy, Social Democracy, and the Origins of Feminism (1996); and (with Kevin B. Anderson) Foucault and the Iranian Revolution: Gender and the Seductions of Islamism (2005).
This event is made possible with the major support of the Amuzegar Chair in Iranian Studies and the Musa Sabi Term Chair of Iranian Studies in collaboration with the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies.
