Green Room
This panel discussion, led by moderator and post-doctoral scholar of Iranian music, Shahab Paranj, will serve as an introduction to the PluComp lecture series, which aims to approach composition from a non-Eurocentric perspective. Join Erberk Erylmaz from Ankara Music and Fine Arts University and Reza Vali from Carnegie Mellon University to explore the ways in which traditional Turkish and Persian music enhance the creative process of contemporary composers. They will explore the special forms, scales, modes, rhythms, and other components that define Turkish and Persian music and how they can be adapted to create new works. The panel will delve into the complex issues surrounding cultural appropriation and authenticity that composers may encounter when incorporating non-Eurocentric elements into their music.
