ROXANA - UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema 2024
On June 22, 2024, we were incredibly honored to present the Los Angeles premiere of Parviz Shahbazi’s ROXANA. This special event featured a Q&A appearance by cinematographer Pouya Shahbazi as part of the 2024 UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema by the UCLA Film and Television Archive at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. About ROXANA: A listless young man splits his time between barely caring for his mom, hanging out at the local underground pool hall, and spending his best friend’s money. A chance encounter with Roxana, after her car is broken into, focuses his attention. Soon, he centers his life around helping her recover a stolen camera crucial for her wedding photography business. However, in trying to solve her problems, he only deepens his own. Writer-director Parviz Shahbazi crafts an arresting portrayal of young Iranians struggling to find their way and start their lives in a world where one misstep can have the direst consequences.
