The Hermès Birkin handbag was first created in 1984 by the company’s chief executive, Jean Louis Dumas. He modified the original Haut à Courroies bag, which was made to carry equestrian gear, so that it was more versatile, easier to carry, and modern. British actress/singer Jane Birkin was the inspiration for this bag, hence the name. Each Birkin is completely handmade by a single artisan in the Hermès ateliers in France, and it takes an average of fifty hours to complete one Birkin. Because of the very limited production, Birkins have become one of the rarest and most sought-after fashion items by women worldwide. Only devoted VIP clients of Hermès are given an opportunity to purchase these rare bags.

Identity Screening 3, 2020, from the latest sold-out series by renowned artist Shadi Yousefian. A unique silk screen on wood panel overlaid with acrylic wash and epoxy resin. Measures 38" x 38".
Shadi Yousefian was born in Tehran and moved to the U.S. when she was sixteen. She received both her Bachelor’s (2003) and Master’s (2006) of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University.
Shadi’s work engages personal and social issues, particularly cultural identity and the immigrant experience. She addresses universal themes of loss, alienation, and reinvention. Her work suggests fragmentation and dissolution, but also the endeavor to reinvent and reconstruct a self in a new social and cultural context.
Shadi uses techniques that appear to destroy and distort the whole – cutting up letters, using only specific features of a photograph, scratching a negative, etc. – and reassembles them as parts of a new image that captures both memory as passage of time, and memory as the willful looking again at something anew. This process conveys a mirroring effect of the past and present, articulating both a distortion as well as a reconstruction.

THE LOSS OF OUR IDENTITY #7 - 2007, edition 2 of 6. By Sadegh Tirafkan (Iranian, 1965-2013). Chromogenic photograph, Size: 37" x 30"
Sadegh Tirafkan explored the layering of traditional and modern Iranian culture, and the conflict between Iranian and Western cultures in his photographs, collages, and video installations.
Tirafkan got his creative start performing theatrical events in mosques and governmental centers. His later works were informed by the period of time when he tried different artistic roles like acting, directing, authoring, puppetry, puppet and scene design, storytelling, producing, and short film-making. Though he was educated in art, Tirafkan shared little in common with the photographic mainstream of this time, and his works show a strong break from his predecessors.
After Tirafkan’s death in 2013, his artistic heritage is preserved in the museum of the Tirafkan Foundation in Tehran, which contains a huge number of photographs, short films, videos, installations, scenarios, and multimedia pieces. His work has been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the British Museum.
