The Hermès Birkin handbag was first created in 1984 by the company’s chief executive, Jean Louis Dumas. He modified the original Haut à Courroies bag, which was made to carry equestrian gear, so that it was more versatile, easier to carry, and modern. British actress/singer Jane Birkin was the inspiration for this bag, hence the name. Each Birkin is completely handmade by a single artisan in the Hermès ateliers in France, and it takes an average of fifty hours to complete one Birkin. Shabnam Yousefian was born in Tehran in 1982. She started drawing and painting at age seven. She pursued oil painting professionally at age sixteen under the supervision of a prominent instructor.
After graduating high school, Shabnam capitulated to social expectations and attended Azad University in Tehran to study Microbiology. However, she continued painting and attending art classes while in university. Her persistence and hard work helped her to excel in this area so much that in 2001 she became an instructor in that art institute despite her young age.
At age twenty-two Shabnam opened her own art gallery in 2004 in Tehran. Her art works included painting and sculpture.
In 2008 she immigrated to the United States. Realizing that art was her only passion, she decided to revisit her choice of undergraduate study. In the fall 2014 Shabnam started attending the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California, to continue her studies. She graduated and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2016.
Her early style of painting was conventional realism, focused on the female figures, and copying the academic masters. While attending Claremont Graduate University, her vision started shifting to more contemporary subjects, still focused mainly on female figures initially. Gradually her relationship to photographic sources changed and her style of paintings became more stylized and suggestive.

Fariba Ameri was born in 1959 in Tehran into a multicultural family. Fariba grew up captivated by her grandmother’s chilling stories of her escape from Moscow during Russia’s Bolshevik revolution. Fariba’s worldview was shaped by a mélange of Eastern and Western cultures which in turn impact her artistic style and sensibilities. She began to paint at age 14, enchanted by a book about Van Gogh’s life. She finished her high school education in Leysin American School in Switzerland and moved to the United States in 1977 to attend the University of Southern California (USC). With the outbreak of the Iranian revolution, Fariba made California her permanent home.
Ameri’s most intense bodies of work have been produced since 2010 when she began to work full time in her studio in Santa Monica, California. Her work has been shown in multiple exhibitions in California. She has developed a unique style of expression in her paintings that is self-reflective and honest. Her unpretentious approach to painting reflects her life experiences through a non-traditional use of mixed media, intense color, and surface tension, which foster a personal connection with the viewer. Drawing on Persian mythological themes for their powerful imagery, she brings an emotional and intellectual intensity to each canvas. The same impulses inform her sculptures which are highly interactive pieces. Like the paintings, they summon the viewer to investigate and to contemplate.
Ameri’s work is influenced by her personal experiences as a woman with a diverse heritage. Her primitive style produces a sense of urgency, presence, and movement. Her inimitable fusion of form and content is powerful, dramatic, and emotional.

Naser Al-Din Shah Photograph Collection

Three pictures of Naser al-Din Shah (b. 1831- d. 1896) from the personal collection of Amir Doustmohammad Moayer al-Mamalek who married (1867) Esmat al-Dowleh (b. 1856-d. 1905), the daughter of Naser al-Din shah at age eleven. Generally speaking, to this day historians of Qajar have entirely disregarded the importance of the Moayer al-Mamalek family in the process and development of art in Qajar-era Iran. Doustali Khan Moayer al-Mamalek (b. 1821-d. 1873), the father of Amir Doustmohammad (b. 1857-d. 1913) and his brother Heshmat al-Mamalek (b. 1859-d. 1936), was one of the elites of Nasser al-Din Shah’s court who supported immensely and invested deeply in the development of Persian art, including calligraphy, painting, photography, and architecture.
Dr. Khosronejad is an Iranian who began his studies in Tehran before moving to France to pursue a Ph.D. in social anthropology. His area of research is Iran, Persianate societies, and the Middle East more generally.

It was during a business trip to a neighboring country in 2011 that Ali witnessed a dreadful scene involving a woman. She was in love with a man, but was being forced to marry her cousin.
Instead of being subjected to this arranged marriage, she set herself on fire.
For about two months, all Ali could think about were shocking images from that day. Ali‘s friend and former sociology professor recommended he express his thoughts artistically. Ali found that painting was the outlet that his soul needed to process this and many other examples of the repression of women in the Middle East. Ali tries to convey his innermost thoughts through his art. Each canvas attempts to convey a certain aspect of struggle, dignity, and the human right to live free.
