ATINE is an all-female ensemble based in Paris, comprised of Aida Nosrat (vocals), Sogol Mirzaei (tar), Saghar Khadem (percussions), Christine Zayed (qanun), and Marie-Suzanne de Loye (bass).
Being Iranian no longer means coming from a faraway land. Classical Iranian music is now no longer considered exotic. Nor is it viewed as a monument that needs to prove that it’s untouchable and untouched.
Otherness is no longer a subject under discussion in this century as previously. Ancient times and faraway places are effortlessly distilled into the same here and now. And this is where Atine’s music fits in: Iranian music, music for the present time, music that has been freed of obligations as much of reverence as of irreverence.
These five musicians fashion art music - that yet has a popular appeal - without saddling themselves with repetition or imitation. They redeploy the exhilaration of Saadi’s ghazals, the poetry of Sheikh Baha'i and the great romantics of Kadjar times for today. The sophisticated sequencing of Iranian music, the intertwining melodies of tar and qanun, the deft tombak drum, the profoundly rich vocals are darkly mirrored by the western viola da gamba. However the music has not been westernized, nor updated, nor subverted. ATINE’s notes are purely Iranian. But of a Iranian extending well beyond the geographical sphere of Iran.
