Join us for an inspiring live virtual talk with renowned Iranian contemporary artist Nahid Hagigat and acclaimed curator Pantea Haghighi as they explore the themes and creative process behind Hagigat’s solo exhibition, NAHID HAGIGAT: ETCHED IN TIME. Currently on view at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco through March 23, 2025, the exhibition showcases Hagigat’s powerful and deeply feminist body of work, which bridges traditional Iranian art with contemporary perspectives on identity and resilience.
This conversation will offer an intimate look into Hagigat’s artistic journey, her commitment to storytelling through visual narratives, and the ways her paintings challenge conventions while celebrating the strength of women across generations. About Nahid Hagigat
Nahid Hagigat, born in Tehran, Iran in 1943, is a pioneering artist whose work bridges Iranian and Western art. After graduating in Fine Arts from Tehran University, Hagigat continued her studies in the United States at New York University in the early 1970s. As she pursued her Ph.D. from New York University in Art, she often exhibited her etchings and photo etchings in Tehran and was instrumental in introducing printmaking to the Iranian art scene. In 2013, Hagigat was included in the seminal show Iran Modern, at the Asia Society in New York and recently in LACMA’s Women Defining Women In Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond, in 2023. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, JP Morgan-Chase, New York University, and World Bank in Washington, D.C. The artist lives and works in NYC and is represented by ADVOCARTSY gallery in Los Angeles.
About Pantea Haghighi
Pantea Haghighi is the Curator in Residence at the Vancouver Art Gallery. based in Vancouver, BC. Haghighi is a Doctoral student at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on modernism in architecture and visual arts in relation to vernacular politics. Her expertise in contemporary art has supported her contribution to community development in Canadian institutions. Haghighi utilizes her experience collaborating with individuals from various cultural backgrounds to bring communities together, creating spaces that encourage discussion and the exchange of ideas.
Haghighi's curatorial projects include. Poets, Locks, Cages: Parviz Tanavoli. (Vancouver Art Gallery, 2023). Gohar Dashti: Dissonance (West Vancouver Art Museum, 2020); Looking At Persepolis: The Camera in Iran, 1850-1930 (The Polygon Gallery, 2018), Modernism in Iran (Griffin Art Projects, 2018); where/between (Southern Alberta Art Gallery, 2016); Mirrored Explosions (West Vancouver Museum, 2016); Unsent Dispatches from the Iranian Revolution, 1978-1979 (Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver; Kenderdine Gallery, University of Saskatchewan and Windsor Art Gallery, Ontario, 2005).
