Simin Behbahani, the esteemed poet and the first female recipient of Farhang Foundation's Heritage Award, was honored in 2011 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Known as the "lioness of Iran" for her fearless voice and profound poetic insights, Behbahani's legacy transcends borders and generations.
Her mastery of ghazals, sonnet-like poems characterized by their evocative themes and innovative use of meter and everyday language, has left an indelible mark on modern Persian literature. Through her poetry, she courageously addressed societal issues such as poverty, corruption, freedom of expression, and human rights, giving voice to the marginalized and oppressed. Behbahani's work expanded the scope of traditional Persian verse, influencing countless poets and readers worldwide.
Nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997, Behbahani's recognition by Farhang Foundation underscored her global impact and enduring relevance. Despite being unable to attend the ceremony in person due to restrictions, her pre-recorded acceptance speech resonated in LACMA's Bing Theater, touching the hearts of a live audience. For this special occasion, she crafted a poignant poem titled "I'm So in Love," which was beautifully recited in Persian by author and journalist Homa Sarshar, followed by an English translation by renowned translator Niloufar Talebi.
