Melding ancient influences with a futuristic sound, Whispers From The Underworld is a new solo concert from acclaimed composer, vocalist, sonic conceptualist and performance artist Sussan Deyhim.
Incorporating the ancient mysticism of Middle Eastern music with the wizardry of modern technology, vocalist/composer/sonic conceptualist and performance artist, Sussan Deyhim creates a haunting and lushly layered vocal performance in her cutting edge one woman show Whispers from the Underworld. This 75 min performance is as much rooted in ancient musical rituals, as it is in her futuristic sonic vision. Much of the music is derived from her various excursions in film music, visual arts and opera.
For this special event Sussan Deyhim will present the world premiere of Whispers from the Underworld,a rare live performance of her compositions for multiple collaborations with prominent international artists. Including excerpts from music component of her most recent collaboration with the visionary director Godfrey Reggio with music by Philip Glass and Deyhim on their upcoming film Once Within A Time, produced by Steven Soderbergh.
The evening will also feature excerpts from her compositions for Iranian visual artist and filmmaker Shirin Neshat. Including a rare performance of their Golden Lion winning video installation Turbulent and Logic of the Birds produced by Roselee Goldberg.
Other components of the performance include score for her media stage production The House is Black Media Project initiated at CAP UCLA and premiered and presented at Royce Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Wallis. She will also perform excerpts from her collaboration with opera composer Torsten Rasch, a commission from the Dresden’s Semperopera and Villa Massimo. (German Academy in Rome)
Deyhim’s vocally virtuoso and passionate original soundscape and compositions has moved audiences internationally. Her work has been heard on major motions pictures, in prominent art installations in museums, traditional vocal music festivals and progressive electronic music events internationally. Leaving the audiences at awe with her seamless 4 octave vocal range, performing a wide range of musical influences rooted in ritualistic ancient traditions of the Middle East, European classical musical influences and NYC’s experimental music signature.
"I have known Sussan Deyhim’s work for many years. As a vocalist and composer, she is a person of outstanding ability and accomplishment. I was pleased to collaborate with Sussan on Godfrey Reggio’s recent film, Once Within a Time.”
Philip Glass
"In Godfrey's universe there’s no such thing as a second choice, and so he conjures the perfect collaborators by employing his unique sense of alchemy. ONCE WITHIN A TIME wouldn’t work without Sussan Deyhim because it needed her gift—and the lived experience that informs it—to create something both irresistible and epic.”
Steven Soderbergh
"Sussan operates through intuitive intelligence - you will be surprised what you may see in Sussan’s voice. I’ve worked with her in my film “Once Within a Time”, Phillip Glass doing the score. And I will say without exaggeration, without saying a word she says all words. I call this sympathetic magic.”
