LOS ANGELES, February 10, 2022 - Farhang Foundation is proud to announce the 2022 winning design for our Annual Nowruz Street Banner Competition. After a two-year hiatus due to the global pandemic, we are thrilled to be returning to our in-person Nowruz celebrations as part of our 13th Annual Celebration of Nowruz (the Iranian New Year) at UCLA's Dickson Court, taking place on Sunday, March 20, 2022.

"The Farhang Foundation annual Nowruz Street Banner Competition is now in its tenth year and each year the competition receives immense enthusiasm from artists worldwide. This year, we are especially proud of receiving a record number of submissions, especially after the long two-year global pandemic imposed an absence of our cherished Nowruz celebrations." said Hormoz Ameri, Chairman of Farhang Foundation. "We are so proud of this year's winning design by Ms. Najva Erfani and we are delighted to have the streets of Los Angeles decorated with her beautiful artwork announcing the arrival of Nowruz."

Farhang Foundation's annual Nowruz Banner Competition began in 2011, and it has quickly become a tradition that preludes Farhang's signature event, returning to UCLA on March 20.

Each year, through its Nowruz Banner Competition, Farhang reaches out to the global community of artists, illustrators, and graphic designers, enlisting their talents to create and submit original designs that capture the essence of Nowruz. Starting in mid January and throughout March, the winning design shines on hundreds of large pole banners throughout the streets of Los Angeles, announcing the arrival of spring and the largest celebration of Nowruz in the world!

2022 Nowruz Banner Design Winner: Najva Erfani

NavaErfaniThis year's winning design was awarded to Iranian artist Najva Erfani from Tehran. "I am thrilled that my design was selected by Farhang Foundation to help celebrate and promote this cultural treasure among Iranians as well as the community-at-large, and it will serve as a reminder of happy memories of our culture, the culture of peace, reconciliation, and kindness," said Erfani. "In this design, the two angelic figures with the faces of the sun represent the warmth and bright promise of Nowruz. The figure on the right is holding a hyacinth and is the bearer of glad tidings of the arrival of spring with her wheatgrass skirt, which carries key ingredients of the Haft Sîn display. The angel on the left is blowing her trumpet, announcing the arrival of spring and awakening everyone up from their winter nap. The lion is an important symbol in Iranian culture and is a guardian full of wisdom and enlightenment.

Najva Erfani is an Iranian painter and illustrator born in Tehran in 1984. She has designed and created album covers, murals, literary book cover art, and children's book illustrations. Many of Erfani's creations are inspired by ancient Iranian literature, mythology, art, and culture.

In addition to participating in more than eighty group exhibitions in Iran, England, France, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, and Serbia, Erfani has had several solo exhibitions in Iran. In 2020, Erfani designed Ebi’s Lalehzar album cover. She has also illustrated more than forty book covers, including the cover design of Mashallah Khan in the Court of Harun Al-Rasheed by the late renowned author Iraj Pezeshkzad."
